Being included in nationwide “best” lists is nothing new for Littleton, the idyllic New England town nestled in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. From Outside Magazine’s “Ten Best American Dream Towns” in 2005, to last year’s list of “Americas Best Main Streets” by the Huffington Post, the historic town located just 3 hours from Boston, seems to find it’s way onto lists year after year. The combination of scenery, services, outdoor activities and a picture perfect Main Street – complete with art galleries, great restaurants and the worlds longest candy counter – have made Littleton the economic hub of NH’s North Country since the mid 1800’s.

The latest list of “50 Best Small Town Downtowns in America” was created using ranking bodies such as Parade Magazine, Travel and Leisure, Fox News travel, Smithsonian Magazine and others. “The goal of this ranking list is to find the best small town downtown areas for both residents as well as visitors to the area,” states bestreviews.org, who compiled the list. “It’s really no surprise to those of us who live here and the tourists who come back year after year,” says Jim Alden, owner of the world famous Chutters Candy Store (home to the aforementioned mega- candy counter), “but new visitors are always surprised at how cool this place is.”

In addition to being a destination itself, it’s that surprising “coolness” that has made Littleton the perfect day trip from surrounding tourist areas such as Lincoln/Woodstock and North Conway as well as major ski resorts. That coolness comes from the subtle, yet inherently progressive nature of this community. Unique shops, galleries and award winning eateries continue to pop up along the walkable main street and increasingly developed “river district”, which parallels the main drag, as the former mill town continues to transform itself into the artistic and culinary hub of Northern New England. No doubt, when someone puts together the list of “surprisingly cool” towns in America, Littleton will make it’s mark again.
